The article by Erian Toohiey published in yesterday's
National Timres on its face raises important questions
ZU nationaTI -scurity.
Late last night the Government sought and obtained from
the Chief justice of Australia, SirHarrYGibbs, interim
injunctions restraining John Fairfax Sons Ltd and
Brian Toohey from
publishing articles other than those contained in
the issue of the National Times dated 6-12 May 198~ 3
based on information derived from the classified
documents referred to in the said issue; and
communicating to any persbn the said documnents or
information derived from them.
A further order was made requiring the defendents to deliver
to the Registrar of the High Court on or before 10 May 1983
all documents referred to as classified documents at page 3
of the said issue there to remain until further order.
The injunctions stand until 10.15 am next Tuesday, 10 May,
when the matter will be fully argued before the High Court.
Other appropriate action is being taken by the Government
to establish the source or sources of the material referred
to in the article.
No action taken by the Government should be treated as
confirmation of the accuracy of any individual matter
referred to in the article;
