Statement by the Acting Prime Minister, Senator W F Spooner

The Acting Prime Minister, Senator Spooner, announced today that the present Secretary of the Department of Primary Industry Mr. JV Moroney CBE , will be appointed Chairman of the Australian Wheat Board in succession to the late Sir John Teasdale, as from 27th October. The period of the appointment will be three years.
Senator Spooner said that Mr Moroney had. been associated with the production and marketing of Australian primary products since the formation of the Department of Markets and Migration in 1925. In particular, he had been in close touch with wheat marketing and stabilisation developments. In his official. position, he was closely associated with the late Sir John Teasdale.
The Acting Prime Minister added that Mr. Moroney had taken part in discussions in London and Brussels on the effects on Australian exports of Britain's possible entry into the Common Market, He is at present in London as,, a member of the Australian Delegation to the Commonwealth Prime Minister’s Conference,
Mr. Moroney has been Secretary of the Department of primary industry since early 1956 and was Secretary to –the Australian Agricultural ' Council for a number of years. He was educated at Hamilton in Victoria
The Acting Prime Minister also announced that Mr Moroney would be succeeded as Secretary of the Department of Primary Industry by Mr ACB Maiden, at present Director of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics.
Before taking up his appointment as Director of the Bureau in May, 1959 Mr Maiden had been Commercial Counsellor and Australian Government Trade Commissioner in Washington. His previous appointments included Assistant Director of the Bureau and Assistant Secretary (Tariff) in the, Department of' Trade.
Mr,, Maiden led the Australian Delegation in the final stages of the International, Wheat Conference in Geneva this year and more recently led delegation to the FAO, Comittee. on Commodity Problems and the United Nations Commission
on International Commodity Trade. Mr Maiden is President of the Australian Agricultural Econmoics Society.
In announcing his appointment-Senator. Spooner mentioned that Mr, Maiden’s services had been sought recently for the position of an Assistant Director-General of the Food and. Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, T he Director-General of FAO had, however, graciously agreed. To his release; from, this appointment,
Mr, Maiden was born in Taree in New South Wales. He was educated at the New . England University College and holds B. A. Degree from the University of Sydney .
