MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR SIR SERETSE KHAMA,
PRESIDENT OF BOTSWANA
The Minister for Health, Mr Michael MacKellar, will represent
Australia at the memorial service for the late President of
Botswana, Sir Seretse Khama, in the capital, Gaborone, on
24 July.
Mr MacKellar will leave Australia on 22 July. He will be
accompanied to Gaborone by the Australian High Commissioner
to Botswana, Mr K. R. Douglas-Scott.
After attending the memorial service, Mr MacKellar will visit
Zimbabwe for discussions with Prime Minister Mugabe and
senior members of his government.
Mr MacKellar will also be visiting Kenya and Mauritius for
discussions. With the death of Sir Seretse Khama, Africa and the Commonwealth
has lost a great senior statesman, who contributed significantly
to the attainment of a democratic and peaceful solution to the
Rhodesian conflict.
Mr MacKellar's visit will serve to strengthen Australia's
important ties with fellow Commonwealth member countries
