COMMONWEALTH GAMES EDMONTON
The Hon. Wal Fife, Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs,
will represent the Federal Government at the 11th Commonwealth
Games to be held in Edmonton, Canada, commencing on 3 August.
The Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Fraser, announced this today.
He said that Australia has a strong contingent at the Games
arnd he felt confident that our team members would perform
well and worthily represent Australia in these competitions.
The Commonwealth Government previously announced a grant of
$ 225,000 to the Australian Commonwealth Games Association.
Of this, $ 75,000 was to assist with pre-event training.
The balance of $ 150,000 was to help meet other team costs.
This is indicative, the Prime Minister said, of the interest of the
Federal Government in Australian sports development and in
supporting the nation's participants in major international
competitions.
Mr Fife, accompanied by his wife, will leave Australia early
next week. They will depart from Edmonton on 9 August.
