Dr. Donald McMichael is to be the first Secretary to the
Department of Home Affairs.
Dr. McMichael is Director of Environmen t in the Department of
Environment, H-ousing and Community Development, and acting
Chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
He had been Secretary of the Department of Environment and
Conservation from its creation in February 1973, and subsequently
of the Department of Environment until its abolition in
December 1975. Before that he had been Director of National
Parks and W~ ildlife in NSIV following some years of association
with the Australian Museum.
Dr. McMichael,, who is 46 years of age, has a Doctorate in
Biology from Harvard University.
The important position of Director of the Environment, being
vacated by Dr. McMichael is to be advertised extensively
throughout Australia, both inside and outsideithe Public Service.
