SENIOR PUBLIC SERVICE APPOINTMENTS
The Prime Minister this afternoon announced that the
Governor-General in Council had approved a number of senior
appointments in the Australian Public Service, following the
swearing-in this morning of the new Ministry.
Mr D. H. McKay, who was Secretary to the Department of
Overseas Trade prior to its abolition, will become Secretary
Designate-. in the-Department-of Primary Industry.. Mr W. Ives, C. B. E.,
will remain as Permament Head of that Department for a period to
Sattend to-existing commitments. Mr McKay is a former Director of
the Buearu of Agricultural Economics in the Department of
Primary Industry and has wide experience in primary industry matters.
Mr J. Scully, who was Secretary to the Department of National
Resources prior to its abolition, has been appointed Secretary to the
newly created Department of Trade and Resources. Mr Scully has also
been appointed as Secretary to tre-Department of the Special Trade
Representative. Prior to his appointment to the position of
Secretary to the then Department of Minerals and Energy in August 1975,
Mr Scully was a Deputy Secretary in the then Department of
Trade and Industry.
Mr A. J. Woods has beenappointed as Secretary to the newly created
Department of National Development. Before his promotion earlier
this year as a Deputy Secretary in the Department of the Prime
Minister and Cabinet, Mr Woods was a Deputy Secretary in the
Department of Industry and Commerce. / 2

The Government hasyet to complete the selection processes for
appointment of a Permanent Head for the newly created Department of
Home Affairs. A number of functions have been transferred to the
Department of Home Affairs from the Department of Administrative
Services and Mr A. R. Palmer, Deputy Secretary in the Department
of Administrative Services, has been named as Acting Secretary to
the Department of Home Affairs until a Permanent Head is chosen.
The appointments of Messrs. McKay, Scully, Woods and
are effective from today.
