VISIT BY PRIME MINISTER OF JAPAN
The Prime Minister, the Hon. E. G. Whitlam, M. P.,
today announced details of the itinerary' in the Australian
Capital Territory for the visit by His Excellency Mr.. Kakuei
Tanaka, Prime Minister of Japan.
Mr. Tanaka will arive from New Zealand in a Japan
Air Lines Special Flight DC 8 aircraft next Thursday, October
31, to undertake two days of official engagements in the A. C. T.
He will be received at the Fairbairn Air Base by Mr.
Whitlam and given a 19-gun salute. On Friday, November 1,
Mr. Tanaka will have official discussions with Mr. Whitlam
and also with members of Cabinet. Afterwards he will witness
the signing of a cultural agreement between Australia and
Japan. An Australian Government luncheon, hiosted by Mr.
Whitlam, will follow. Both Mr. Tanaka and Mr. Whitlam will
speak at the luncheon.
In the afternoon Mr. Tanaka will visit the Australian
War Memorial and also the Mount Ainslie Lookout.
On Saturday, November 2, Mr. Tanaka will hold a press
conference before attending a luncheon at Government House
with the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr.
In the afternoon Mr. Tanaka and members of his official
party will fly to Sydney. At night Mr. Tanaka will attend a
reception given by members of the Japanese community in Sydney.
He has no official engagements on Sunday, November 3, before
leaving Sydney next day for Perth. Mr. Tanaka's itinerary in
Western Australia has already been announced by the Western
Australian authorities.
Mr. Whitlam recalled that during his visit to Japan in
October 1973 he had invited Mr. Tanaka to visit Australia and
Mr. Tanaka had accepted this invitation.
In welcoming Mr. Tanaka's visit, Mr. Whitlam said that
it would represent a further significant step in the development
of friendly and co-operative relations between Australia and
Japan. He also revealed that Mr. ' Tanaka will spend more time in

Australia during his official visit than he had in most other
foreign countries he has toured since becoming head of the
Japanese Government. Mr. Tanaka will be in Australia for
almost six days.
