VISIT BY PRINCE HIRO
The Prime Minister. Mr Whitlam announced tonight
th; t flis Imperial Highness Prince Naruhito would visit Australia
to gain experience of life abroad and to widen his international
perspective. The Japanese Foreign Ministry announced
Prince Hiro's visit after a meeting of the Japanese Cabinet
early today. His Imperial Highness Prince Naruhito is in the
third year of Middle School. He is to leave Tokyo on 16 August
for a stay of 15 days in Australia. He will travel via Sydney
to Melbourne arriving there on 17 August. On 27 August and
28 August His Imperial Highness will visit Canberra. He will
leave Sydney to return to Tokyo on 30 August.
Mr Whitlam said that the visit by the fourteen-year
old eldest son of the Crown Prince of Japan and, after the
Crown Prince, heir to the Japanese throne would be private and
informal. He added that the visit was designed to allow
Prince Hiro to learn something of every day life in Australia.
