The Prime Minister, the Minister for Overseas Trade and the
Treasurer, the Ministers for Defence and for Labor and
Immigration and the President and Secretary of the A. C. T. U.
conferred in Canberra this morning.
It was decided that the committee composed of representatives
of Australian Government departments, the Australian
Council of Salaried and.-Prfessional Associations and the
Council of Commonwealth Public Service Organisations should
further investigate the possibility of obtaining alternative
work within existing establishments conducted by the Department
of Manufacturing Industry. The committee will report as
soon as practicable. Meantime no action will be taken by
the Government to reducqe employment within those establishments.
It was also decided that the Ministers for Overseas Trade,
for Urban and Regional Development and for Manufacturing
Industry and officers of the A. C. T. U. and the unions concerned
will discuss the effect of imports on employment in the
textile, clothing and footwear industries.
