APPOINTMENT OF AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR TO AFGHANISTAN
0 The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Whitlam, announced
today that Mr A. M. Morris, whose appointment as Australian
Ambassador to Pakistan w-s announced on 1 May, has also been
concurrently appointed as Australian Ambassador to Afghanistan.
Mr Morris will be resident in Islamabad but will Day visits to
Afghanistan from time to time.
Mr Morris was born in 1919 and was educated at Geelong
Grammar School and the University of Oxford. He served with the
British Army from 1939 to 1945 when he joined the Department of
Foreign Affairs. He was stationed in Berlin, Bonn and New Delhi
before his appointment as Australian Minister and later Ambassador
to Laos from 1960 to 1964. From 1966 he was Australian Ambassador
to Austria and from 1968 was concurrently accredited as Australian
Ambassador to Switzerland until 1970. He was Ambassador to South
Viet-Nam from 1970 until his recent appointment to Pakistan.
Mr Morris is married with three children.
