AMBAZSADOR TO TURKEY
The Minister of State and Acting Minister for Foreign
Affairs, Senator Willesee, announced today the appointment of
Mr J. M. McMillan as Ambassador to Turkey to succeed Vice Admiral
Sir Alan McNicoll, who will retire in March.
Mr McMillan, who was born in 1913, was educated in
Melbourne and joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1937.
His most recent appointment has been as High Commissioner in
Ghana. He served overseas in Washington, Moscow ( twice),
London, Karachi, Paris and Jakarta before being appointed
Minister and later Ambassador to Israel from 1960 to 1962.
He was Australian Ambassador to Brazil from 1965 to 1970 and
has been High Commissioner in Ghana since the end of 1970.
Mr McMillan is married with one daughter.
In announcing Mr McMillan's appointment, Senator
Willesee also paid tribute to the retiring Ambassador, Sir
Alan McNicoll, for his long service to Australia. Senator
Willesee recalled his service in the Navy, in which be rose
to become Chief of Staff from 1965 to 1968, and his appointment
in 1968 as Australia's first Ambassador to Turkey.
