FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO THE STATES SPECIAL GRANTS
Statement by the Prime minister, the Rt. Hon. William McMahon,
CHi, MP
The Commonwealth Grants Commission has considered
applications made by Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania for
special financial assistance from the Commonwealth for the year
1972-73 under Section 96 of the Constitution.
The Commission recently recommended payment of
special grants in 1972-73 as set out below, and the Commonwealth
Government has approved the Commission's recommendations.
Queensland Advance grant for 1972-73
South Australia
Advance grant for 1972-73
Plus positive completion grant:
being a final adjustment of an
advance grant paid in 1970-71
Amount recommended for payment in
1972-73
Tasmania Advance grant for 1972-73
Less negative completion grant:
being a final adjustment of an
advance grant paid in 1970-71

Legislation to authorise payments of these grants will
be introduced during the Budget sittings of Parliament.
In aggregate, therefore, special grants amounting
to $ 38,600,000 will be paid by the Commonwealth to the three States
in tlis financial year, in addition to the substantially increased
general financial assistance grants agreed for all States at the
Premiers' Conference on 22 June last.
