Mr Michael Pezzullo has been appointed Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for a period of five years, commencing 13 October 2014.
Currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Mr Pezzullo joined the public service as a graduate in 1987.
He has extensive experience in the public sector, predominantly in the Department of Defence in strategic policy and intelligence roles.
He worked as an adviser to the former Foreign Minister, the Hon Gareth Evans QC and was Deputy Chief of Staff to the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Kim Beazley.
Mr Pezzullo replaces Mr Martin Bowles PSM who has been appointed Secretary of the Department of Health.
The current Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Mr Roman Quaedvlieg, will assume the role of CEO.
