2014 Prime Minister's Literary Awards

The 2014 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards are now open to entries from Australian authors, poets and historians.

Established in 2008, the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards are Australia’s richest literary prize with a total prize pool of $600,000 to winners and shortlisted authors across six categories.

These significant awards celebrate and bring recognition to the esteemed role Australian writers play in enlightening and entertaining us, reflecting on our history and taking our stories to the world.

The six award categories are fiction, non-fiction, Australian history, poetry, young adult fiction and children's fiction. Winners are awarded $80,000 tax-free each and shortlisted authors receive $5,000 tax-free.

In the literary categories, awards are granted to the books deemed to be of the highest literary merit.

The Australian history category prize is awarded to an outstanding publication, production of a body of work that contributes significantly to an understanding of Australian history. Eligible works include books, journals and magazines, documentaries, websites and other forms of multimedia, or a series of these.

The non-fiction category will again celebrate the rich diversity of voices and commentary we have in Australia.

The Awards are open for books first published and made available for general sale in Australia between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2013.

Entries close at 5.00 pm (AEDT) on 28 February 2014. Entry forms and eligibility guidelines are available at www.arts.gov.au/pmliteraryawards.
