Statement by the Actinc Prime Minister, Mr. J. McEwen
The Acting Prime Minister, Mr. McEwen, announced
today that the first senior award to be offered by Australia to
an educator from another Commonwealth country under the Commonwealth
Scholarship and Fellowship Plan had been accepted by Dr.
Pø FoR. Venables, Principal of the College of Advanced Technology
of the City of Birmingham.
Mr. McEwen said that Dr. Venables' visit should provide
a stimulus in the field of technical education in Australia. Dr.
Venables was one of the leading figures in technological education
in the United Kingdom and had been closely associated with
recent important overseas developments in tis field.
Dr. Venables was expected to arrive in Australia
towards the end of July to spend six weeks in Australia.
Mr. McEwen added that Australia had offered scholarships
to over twenty Commonwealth countries, mainly for postgraduate
studies at Australian universities.
Fifty aw,_, rds would be made, tenable from the beginning
of the 1961 academic year, but it was expected that a small
number of students would arrive in Australia shortlyto commence
post-graduate study during 1960.
Furthermore, offers of scholarships had now been received
in Australia from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand,
South Africa, Mala a and Hong Kong.
