STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, THE
RIGHT HONOURABLE J. G. GORTCN, M. P.,
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 4 JUNE 1968
AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS
I wish to inform the House that I have invited the following
per ans, who have accepted my invitation, to become members of the
Australian Council for the Arts.,-
Miss Elizabeth ARCHDALE, Mi B, E, and
Mr. W. P, COLEMAN, M. L. of New South
W~ ales;
Mrs. Dudley ERWIN and Mr. Barry JONES, of
Victoria;
Dr. Karl LANGER of Queensland;
Mr. Geoffrey DU'ITCN, of South Australia;
Mrs. Jeana BRADLEY, of Western Australia;
Mrs. H. W. HOUGHTCN, of Tasmania; and
Professor C. MASTERMAN, of the Australian
Capital Territory.
Ilam confident that each will make an important and valuable
contribution to the establishment and operation of the Australian Council for
the Arts. The decision to establish a Council to be the Government's
financial agent and adviser on the performing arts was announced by my
predecessor, in Parliament, on 1 November 1967. Subsequently, Dr. H. C.
Coombs was appointed to be its Chairman.
The Council will be associated with the Prime Minister?' s

Headmistress, ABBOTSLEIGH C. of E. Girls' School, WAHROONGA,
since 1958. Sometime Principal, The Women's College, in the University
of Sydney. Fellow of the Senate of the University of Sydney since 1959.;

Mrs. Dudley ERWIN
A graduate in Science and Arts of New York University. Has organised
and produced for stage and television. Has a vocational interest in Modern
Dance and is a Council Member of the Ballarat Fine Arts Gallery.
Mr. Barry JONES
A graduate in Arts, Education and Law of Melbourne University.
Barrister and Solicitor. Lecturer in History at La Trobe University.
Extensive experience with radio, TV, and major art forms.
Queensland
O Dr. Karl LANGER
Doctorate in Philosophy of the University of Vienna. Lecturer in
Architecture and Town Planning in the University of Queensland.
President of the Gallery Society of Queensland. Active interest in
the arts. South Australia
Mr. Geoffrey DUTTON
Poet, critic, commentator, biographer. Sometime Senior Lecturer
in English in the University of Adelaide.
Western Australia
Mrs. Jeana BRADLEY
A graduate in Arts and Senior Lecturer in English in the University of
Western Australia-Has had a long and close association with the theatre
in 7lestern Australia, as a dramatic critic and producer.
Ta smania
Mrs. H. W. HOUGH-TON
A graduate of the University of Melbourne. Associated with the Arts in
Tasmania, with a particular interest in cultural activities in country
districts. Has produced a number of amateur plays.

Professor K. C. MASTERMAN
Sometime Professor of Classics in the Australian National University.
