The Prime Minister today announced further details of the Future Jobs Forum, to be held at Parliament House on Thursday 6 October 2011.
The Future Jobs Forum is an opportunity for the Government to hear from business and unions on the opportunities and challenges facing the Australian economy.
The forum will bring together almost 100 representatives and experts from business, unions, government and academia to discuss how we can build on our outstanding record of economic growth and job creation in recent years.
The forum will also provide participants with an opportunity to look at how industry sectors can work together to turn the current and future challenges facing the domestic and global economies into new business and job opportunities.
The Prime Minister will make the opening address in the first session of the forum, which will be facilitated by Professor Peter Shergold AC, Chancellor of the University of Western Sydney and CEO and Macquarie Group Foundation Professor of the University of New South Wales Centre for Social Impact.
The international key note speaker will be Mr Andrew N Liveris, Chairman and CEO of the Dow Chemical Company and Co-Chair of US President Obama's Advanced Manufacturing Partnership.
Australian-born Mr Liveris has a wealth of business and manufacturing experience and will provide a unique insight into the global trends affecting the Australian economy and how these trends are being addressed in the US.
Mr Liveris will participate in the forum via videolink from Michigan.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer will speak about how global trends are changing the shape of the Australian economy and the types of jobs it creates.
Professor Roy Green, Dean of UTS Business School, will present on the future of manufacturing in a panel session about the opportunities and challenges for the industry in the next decade.
Mr Steve Vamos, President of the Society for Knowledge Economics will open a panel discussion on services in the next decade, which will focus on the skills and capability drivers of success.
Mr Tim Rourke, Country Executive for GE Energy Australia and New Zealand will provide his insights on clean energy business opportunities and jobs prospects over the next ten years.
The final panel session will include a presentation by Dr Megan Clark, CEO of the CSIRO, who will share her experience on the role of innovation and collaboration in driving jobs growth.
The Future Jobs Forum forms part of the Gillard Government's ongoing work to drive job creation and give national prominence to the importance of keeping Australians in work.
It is expected discussions will focus on practical efforts to support and create jobs both in emerging industries of the 21st Century, and in industries where we have a long and proud history.
A focus of the forum will be how we can drive sectors further up the value chain - fostering business innovation, making use of digital technologies, accessing new export markets and improving workforce development.
