The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, will visit Australia on 3 September and then from 7 to 9 September as a guest of the Australian Government. Australia is a founding member of the United Nations and is the twelfth largest contributor to the UN regular and peacekeeping budgets. This will be the first visit by a UN Secretary-General in over a decade.
The Prime Minister will meet the Secretary-General to discuss Australia's support for UN-endorsed missions, including in Afghanistan and East Timor, developments in North Africa and the Middle East, the global response to the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa, the impact of the global economic crisis, as well as international action to address climate change and sustainable development.
