The Australian Government will make a $10 million donation to support the recovery effort in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan on 11 March.The donation will be made to the Red Cross Japan and Pacific Disaster Appeal, following advice from the Japanese Government.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard today said the money will be used to support Japan in its hour of need and to help the Japanese nation get back on its feet after one of the worst tragedies the country has ever endured.Donations to the Red Cross appeal will be used to provide emergency relief, equipment and assistance to affected communities and families in Japan.This morning the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Tony Abbott MHR, attended the Japanese Embassy together to sign a book of condolences. The Prime Minister earlier spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan on 13 March to express sincere condolences to the people and Government of Japan, and to emphasise that Australia stood ready to assist them throughout this disaster.
