Prime Minister Julia Gillard thanked Professor Penny Sackett for her contribution to the promotion of science during her tenure as Australia's Chief Scientist, following news of her resignation today.
Professor Sackett has offered objective, clear and constructive advice during her two-and-a-half-years at the helm of this important office.
She has been a terrific communicator at home and abroad and has helped convey complicated messages on behalf of Government.
Professor Sackett's work as part of the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) has proved invaluable. It has helped to ensure that long-term strategic plans in important areas such as food, water and the environment are being put in place.
The Prime Minister wished Professor Sackett well in all future endeavours and thanked her again for the enthusiasm and commitment she has always shown.
Professor Sackett has developed a strong team with the skills and expertise to continue her good work.
The Government has begun the process for the appointment of a new Chief Scientist.
