Prime Minister to visit New Zealand

The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard will travel to New Zealand on 15 and 16 February.

Ms Gillard will meet the New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key to discuss opportunities for closer bilateral and regional cooperation.

The Prime Minister will express her thanks to the New Zealand Government and the people of New Zealand for their generous assistance during the floods in Queensland and Victoria.

Ms Gillard will use her address to members of New Zealand's Parliament - the first ever by a foreign leader - to highlight the close and enduring partnership between Australia and New Zealand.

Ms Gillard will meet senior New Zealand business leaders in Auckland to discuss recent progress made towards a trans-Tasman single economic market and future steps in this direction.

The Prime Minister will also meet New Zealand's Governor-General, Sir Anand Satyanand GNZM QSO, and the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Phil Goff.

Australia's relations with New Zealand are the closest and most comprehensive we have with any country.

The relationship is shaped by strong ties between our peoples, businesses, governments and defence.

In her discussions, the Prime Minister will emphasise the importance Australia attaches to our close partnership with New Zealand.
