Support for flood recovery package welcomed

Prime Minister Julia Gillard today welcomed the Federal Member for O'Connor Tony Crook's support for the Gillard Labor Government's Flood Response Package to help rebuild flood-affected infrastructure across the country.

This $5.6 billion package includes a pre-payment of $2 billion to make sure rebuilding can get underway as quickly as possible.

The Prime Minster said that Mr Crook's support for the package was good news for flood-affected communities who continue to be hampered by the damage to their local roads, rail lines, bridges and schools.

Mr Crook's endorsement is indicative of a willingness from Australians across the nation to stick together through the recovery and the rebuilding process.

The Government's Flood Response Package includes $2.8 billion in budget savings, $1 billion in the deferral of infrastructure projects and a modest levy for taxpayers earning over $50,000 per annum.

The Prime Minister said that while people who have received an Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) are already exempt from the levy, there were individuals outside of these areas who have also been severely affected.

The Government will provide an exemption to anyone that meets one or more of the criteria for AGDRP and lives in an area declared for the purpose of the National Disaster Recovery and Relief Arrangements.

AGDRP is paid where someone is adversely affected by a major disaster and in the past has included circumstances where a person has suffered a serious physical injury in a disaster, where the disaster caused the death of an immediate family member, or where their principal place of residence sustained major damage.

The Government's Flood Response Package will be introduced into the Parliament next week.
