The Prime Minister and the incoming Foreign Minister have agreed that Mr Rudd will visit Washington and New York from 17 September to 25 September.
Mr Rudd will visit Washington on 17 September, and meet with a range of senior figures in the US Administration.
This visit underlines the very high priority that the Government places on its relations with the United States, Australia's key strategic partner.
Mr Rudd will visit the United Nations in New York from 18 to 25 September. He will represent the Prime Minister at the UN General Assembly and deliver the General Debate statement on behalf of Australia.
Mr Rudd will also participate in the Millennium Development Goals Summit, as well as a meeting of the UN Secretary General's High-Level panel on Global Sustainability, which deals with climate change.
He will participate in a range of other meetings, including bilateral meetings with representatives of other governments present in New York.
