The Australian Government today announced financial assistance to help Australians affected by the Samoan tsunami on 30 September 2009 and Sumatra earthquakes on 30 September and 1 October 2009.
The assistance, through the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment and Funeral Assistance Payment, will support the Australian victims of these devastating events, and their families.
This assistance will provide $1,000 per adult and $400 per child to Australians who, as a result of the Samoan tsunami and Sumatra earthquakes:
* were seriously injured; or
* were eyewitnesses to the devastating disaster events; or
* are immediate family members of Australians who have died, been declared missing or seriously injured.
In addition, a one-off payment of $5,000 will be available to one family member to assist with funeral costs and other related expenses.
The payments are available through Centrelink and claims can be lodged immediately and will be open for six months.
Centrelink social workers are also available to help Australians affected by these devastating events when they arrive back home.
Those affected will have access to crisis intervention, personal support, referral and practical assistance through Centrelink.
