Three Australian and three British firms of architects have
accepted an invitation to participate in an architectural competition for the
design of the bell-tower to be built on Aspen Island in the central basin of
Lake Burley Griffin " n Canberra.
The bell-tower, which will house a carillon, to be made by
a British firm of bellfounders, is the British Government's gift to the
Australian Government to mark the Golden Jubilee of the founding of
Canberra on 12th March, 1913.
The Australam firms are
Messrs Cameron, Chisholm Nicol of Perth, W. A.
Messrs McKay, Cox of Sydney
Messrs Ancher, Mortlock, Murray Woolley of Sydney.
The British firms are
Messrs Ahrens, Burton Koralek of London
Messrs E1dred Evans Denis Gailey of London
Messrs Robert Maguire Keith Murray cf Richmond,
Surrey.
The competition assessors will be
Lord Holford, a past Fresident of the Royal Institute
of British Architects.
Mr John Overall, Chairman of the National Capital
Planning Committee in Canberra; and
Mr Eric Bedford, Chief Architect of the British Ministry
of Public Building and V. orks.
The announcement of the winning design is expected to be
made in April, 1968. As the Prime Minister stated in February this year,
the winning design will be put before the British and Australian Governments
for consideration before being adopted.
