TASMANIAN BLJSHFIRES MESSAGES FROM
OVERSEAS
The following messages have been received from the
Prime Ministerof Canada, Mr. Lester Pearson and the Prime Minister
of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, expressing sympathy to the victims
of the Tasmanian bushfires
From Mr. Lester B. Pearson
" Canadians have been shocked by news of the appalling
loss of life and homes by fires in Tasmania. We of fer our deepest
sympathy to Australians and especially to those in Tasmania
most affected by this disaster."
From Tunku Abdul Rahman
" We are grieved to bear d d3 tk ragkt Tasmania bus hfire
which had incurred extensive loss of life and property. Please
convey my condolence and that of the Government and people of
Malaysia to the unfortunate people of Tasmania who have suffered
in this tragedy. Expressions of sympathy have also been received from the
Governments of Israel and Portugal.
The Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations,
Mr. Bowden, sent a message of sympathy to the Governor of Tasmania
yesterday. The B ritish High Commissioner and the President of the
Board of Trade, Mr. Jay have also sent messages to the Premier of
