RETIREMIENT OF SIR THOMAS PLAYFORD
( Statement by the Acting Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. McEwen)
The Acting Prime Minister, Mr. HcEwen, commented to-day
on the retirement of Sir Thomas Playford as Leader of the South
Australian Opposition.
He said Sir Thomas Playford had provided a remarkable
example of a man devoted to the interests and welfare of his State.
" His achievements on be-half of his State have made a
notable contribution to the growth of the nation.
" The 26 years in which he served as Premier will stand on
the record as those in which Squth Australia made great advances in
its economic and industrial development.
" They are years in which he applied to his office the
highest degree 9f integrity, dignity and ability. I am confident
they will be remembered as a record, not only in time, but in
achie'rement. " South Australia's industrial development, in particular,
will be a continuing legacy of Sir Thomas Playford's foresight,
courage and untiring effort.
" I wish him well in his retirement."
