Today I announce almost $4 million in funding for Tasmanian Networking the Nation (NtN) telecommunications projects.
Of the 30 successful applications, there was a significant grant of $1.6 million allocated to the ‘Furneaux Group Telecommunications Infrastructure Strategy'; initiative, which will establish a CDMA-based mobile telephone and wireless local loop service for Flinders Island.
The project will also provide partial mobile phone coverage for nearby Cape Barren Island, which is also part of the Furneaux Group.
New mobile services will be established in other parts of regional Tasmania, fully committing the Commonwealth';s $1 million expanded mobile phone coverage to regional centres under the Telstra social bonus initiative.
The regions that will benefit include the Central Highlands, Eaglehawk Neck and Marrawah regions.
These mobile telephony projects are particularly important for the safety, social and economic wellbeing of rural communities, and increasingly for tourists.

NtN is the Commonwealth Government';s five-year Regional Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund. Applications are received from a variety of regional-based groups for projects ranging from mobile telephony through to Internet cafes and training. Since it was established in 1997, over 600 projects totalling nearly $300 million have been funded across Australia.
The program was created by the Coalition in recognition of the challenges facing rural and regional Australia in terms of telecommunications services. Initially funded to the level of $250 million, a further $171 million was provided in 1999. The projects funded under this program are bridging the gap in telecommunications services, access and cost between urban and regional and rural Australia.
Only the Coalition has clear policies for improving regional and rural telecommunications.
