VISIT TO AUSTRALIA BY PRESIDENT CLINTON
-1 am very pleased to announce that President Clinton and Mrs Clinton will visit Australia
from 19 to 23 November," the Acting Prime Minister, Tim Fischer, said today.
" President Clinton's visit is an important affirmation of the close bilateral relationship
between Australia and the United States. This will be the Prime Minister'.% first meeting with
the President and is an opportunity for Mr Howard to discuss with the President how Australia
and the United States can fiurte strengthen and expand our substantial relation%.
" The President's visit will take place just before he and the Prime Minister attend the APEC
leaders' meeting at Subic Bay in thc Philippines. The United States plays a crucial economic
and strategic role in the Asia-Pacific and the Pimze Minister looks forward to discussing with
President Clinton opportunities and challenges in thc region. Australia-US tics, particularly in
our alliance, make an important contribution to regional stability and prosperity.
" President Clinton will visit Canberra where he is expected to address the Australian
Parliament and will hold talks with the Government He will also visit Sydney and Cairns.
" The Australian Government looks forward to welcoming President Clinton to Australia," Mr
Fischer said.
